About the Property Optimization tool

Basics

Use the Property Optimization tool in a development system to expose a top-level Single Value property as a database column, and to populate the new column by extracting values from the Storage Stream (BLOB or pzPVStream) column.

The Property Optimization tool also can "expose" values of an embedded property by automatically creating an appropriate Index- class and Declare Index rule.

This capability is available if your development environment meets these prerequisite conditions:

• the Pega-RulesEngine agent System-Job-PropertyOptimizationpyOptimization is enabled for background processing. (See Understanding the Pega-RulesEngine agents.)
• the production level of the system is 1 or 2 (See Production Level.)
• the Data-Admin-DB-Name data instance named PegaRULES identifies, for either the primary database username and password, or the alternate Admin username and password, credentials that allow the ALTER TABLE and CREATE TABLE capabilities for the database.

Starting the Property Optimization tool

From the Application Explorer, expand an application's "Data Model" node and right-click a property name. Select and select Optimize for reporting from the context menu to start a three- step screen flow.

• If the property is a top-level Single Value property, no additional inputs are needed. The tool creates a new database column and starts a background process to populate values for the new column (for existing instances of this class only) from BLOB values. Background processing may take minutes or longer, depending on volume, and computations in your applications involving the property value may fail or produce incorrect results until all background processing is complete.
• If the property is a Page List or Page Group, specify the ruleset and version that is to contain the new Index- class, the properties in that class, and the Declare Index rule. Select a ruleset and Version and click Create. The tool creates a concrete Index- class, properties for the new class, and a Declare Index rule that maintains the indexes. (Background processing creates the instances of the new Index- class.)

Status display

Select > System > Database > Column Population Jobs to see the status of jobs that are queued for background processing by the Pega-RulesEngine agent. If you use the Property Optimization wizard, ensure that this agent is enabled on at least one node of your system.

Notes

• The Property Optimization tool provides an alternative to the Modify Schema wizard and the Column Populator tool in specific situations for Single Value properties. For aggregate and embedded property values, this feature provides an alternative to the Declarative Index wizard .
• Column population (or Index- creation) processing occurs in the background and may take minutes or hours or longer to complete, depending on volume and system load.
• You can't optimize a transient property, as the column values would all be null.
• You can't optimize properties in pega- based rulesets, abstract classes, or classes mapped to pr_other.
• The Advanced tab of the Property form lists the classes for which the property has been optimized.
