Don't confuse versions with the rule management facility, which controls rule check out and check in among a team of developers. In some software products, such features are sometimes called version control.A version is an instance of the Rule-RuleSet-Version rule type. See RuleSet version.
In many places a version rule is referenced with a special syntax consisting of a RuleSet Name value, a colon, and three two-digit values, known as the major version, minor version, and patch version, in the format
RuleSetName:NN-NN-NN
where the NN values can be from 01 to 99.
Informally, the word version applies not only to the Rule-RuleSet-Version instance, but also to the entire collection of rule instances that are associated with that instance. For example, "Version 01-15-02 of the Thorr RuleSet contains 115 rule instances."
RuleSet versions are important in security, in rule resolution processing and in managing and evolving applications.
