yes, when I specify my own key in Obj-Open, it compiles, but it throws an error in the tracer stating that no object could be found matching the class and pyID=""

It seems that GRAILs does it too in a very elegant way through hybernate... you just create / update your domain class and the system does the rest for you- when it first starts up, it checks the DB structure and updates it for you.
