Deprecated rules for upgrade from Pega 7.2 to 8.x

Hi Pega Community,

currently I'm trying to find out what has to be done (rules-wise) for an upgrade from Pega 7.2 to the latest Pega 8 version.
AFAIK there are only instructions for upgrading the infrastructure (DB, App-Server) or Pega Frameworks (Customer Service, Marketing, ...) in the Pega Upgrade Center.

This leads me to the following questions, which I hope you can help me with:

  1. Under the headline "Prepare" in the Pega Upgrade Center it is mentioned how flows can be migrated.
Does this mean there are some deprecated shapes (or other changes) in flows which need to be replaced?
    E. g. we are still having (Pega 6 style) CaseTypes which are not using stages, will they still work in Pega 8?
  2. Is there a list of base Pega functionality which is deprecated now (e. g. usage of Declare_CachedSystemSettings), which you can post here?
  3. In the Upgrade from Pega 6 to 7 ActiveX was replaced by Silverlight. Is Silverlight still used in Pega 8?
  4. Is there something else we need to watch out for when upgrading to Pega 8?

Thanks and regards,

Hi Bernd,

The way Pega handles deprecated rules should allow you to upgrade and fix those issue post upgrade.

We don't have a set of list /rules which are deprecated, but if you follow post upgrade steps it should be fine.

For silverlight :

Hi Shekhar,

thanks for the reply, even though you were not directly answering my questions. I guess what you are saying is, that there shouldn't be significant changes from Pega 7 to 8, and we will find out the details in our post-upgrade steps/tests.

Hi Bernd, please review below about your question on silverlight support. Below is a response from our SMEs in the past, this might help you when you are looking at Silverlight support!

" Both ActiveX and Silverlight have been deprecated by Microsoft for some time. Neither technology is supported across the modern web browsers that we support for Pega applications. As such, we have deprecated features, like WordMerge, that depended on those client-side libraries and are not making further investment in maintaining them.

In 8.4, which is due out in early 2020, we are introducing a new smart shape that uses server-side technology to fill out a word template with data from a case and attach the resulting word document to the case. This happens without any end-user interaction. Further edits to the document can be manually made by an end user by downloading the attachment, editing offline, and then reattaching to the case."

And below is a link from Microsoft -

Silverlight End of Support -

Microsoft Silverlight will reach the end of support on October 12, 2021. Silverlight development framework is currently only supported on Internet Explorer 10 and Internet Explorer 11, with support for Internet Explorer 10 ending on January 31, 2020. There is no longer support for Chrome, Firefox, or any browser using the Mac operating system.
