At the beginning Java can help but mostly because of the Object Oriented Programming. Later on is useful for high level customizations.

I would recomend to take the fast track course, and bootcamp. Then, try to work with Pega technology to gain real world experience.

PRPC was written in Java, so if you want to perform work at a lower level, it's highly recommended you know Java to help extend PRPC's base capabilities.

You don't need to be an expert, but strong proficiency is recommended.
